PROFESSIONAL SUPERVISION

What is professional supervision?
Professional (sometimes called ‘clinical’) supervision for those in the helping professions, including clergy and church workers, is a pivotal support system that nurtures the practitioner’s personal and professional growth within the complex landscape of their roles. It is set to become a mandated practice across the Australian Church, learning from allied health, to provide a dedicated space for reflection, support, and guidance by experienced practitioners. In a nutshell, professional supervision is “the process whereby a professional can discuss personal, professional/clinical, business, and work related issues with a qualified professional supervisor…with a view to resolving professionally orientated issues and with the intention of helping the supervisee to further evolve professionally in a positive manner, as well as identifying any emotional issues” (Armstrong, 2006).

Professional supervision for teachers and educational leaders is also proving to be a valuable opportunity to critically reflect upon teaching practice, building positive relationships with students, adherence to professional and ethical guidelines, as well as seeking critical but caring feedback. It is an opportunity to support the professional through the stresses of school life in an empathic and open way.

Within supervision we will explore experiences, challenges, and successes while ensuring ethical practices and healthy boundaries within your work context. Supervision aids in self-awareness, decision-making, and skill enhancement, combating burnout and supports the renewal of your vocation.

The supervisory relationship starts with establishing the logistics and rapport-building. Understanding who you are, particularly within your work/ministry setting, is vital. The sessions address pastoral challenges, ethical dilemmas, self-care strategies, role identity, conflict resolution, continuous learning and professional development, work-life balance, grief and loss management, and adherence to child safety guidelines.

There are key benefits which underscore the importance of professional supervision:

  • supporting well-being

  • tools to help prevent burnout

  • reflective practice

  • fostering personal growth

  • ethical guidance

  • professional development.

Professional supervision stands as an investment in your professional practice, enhancing your ability to serve with integrity, compassion, and resilience while prioritizing your well-being.

Supervision can take place online through Teams, Zoom or in person at locations in Melbourne, South-west Victoria, or Bendigo.
